Anna Stirgwolt -Recipient - Year 2000 - John's Hopkins University

Anna has been active as a student leader on Yale’s campus, and was

recently elected as the President of the Graduate and Professional Student Senate (GPSS),

the largest student government at Yale representing all of the 6,000 students across

the twelve graduate and professional schools of Yale University.  Prior to her election

as President, Anna served as the Student Advocate for the GPSS.  In her capacity as

GPSS President, Ms. Brady-Estévez additionally serves on the boards of the Association

of Yale Alumni, and Yale Alumni Magazine.

Anna is a PhD candidate working with Prof. Menachem Elimelech to provide novel

treatment systems for pathogen removal from water. Her most recent work is the

development of a CNT-hybrid filter which attains 5-7 log removal of viruses under

gravity driven pressures. The filter also achieves 100% removal of E. coli with over

80% inactivation, thereby reducing biofouling. The study of the hybrid filter is focused

on providing portable water treatment options at low costs, and low energy inputs for

use in developing and developed regions alike.

Jason Rafferty - Recipient - Year 2001 - Bates College

Jason Rafferty is a second year MD candidate in the New Pathways Program at Harvard Medical School and a Jack Kent Cooke Scholar. He is also involved in the HMS student government, working with local teens at the Martha Elliot Health Center, the American Medical Association's Medical Student Ethics Committee (Vice-Chair), and the Massachusetts Medical Society's Violence Committee. In addition, Jason was a co-founder and committee chair of the Day of Service at Harvard University initiative. He graduated with honors in neuroscience from Bates College and spent time teaching eighth grade math before starting medical school. Outside of anatomy lab, he pursues interests in child and adolescent health and bioethics, and spends as much time as he can running, hiking, and enjoying the outdoors.

The Vice President Student Advocacy oversees the main advocacy branch of the HGC. This position organizes committees for particular events or initiatives, as well as coordinating graduate volunteers. In addition to carrying out these projects, Vice President Student Advocacy is responsible for pursuing academic and career-related advocacy issues for the HGC.
